Grade 1 Highlights

Welcome to our Fantastic First Grade at Christ the Teacher Catholic School. First Grade is a year where your child will continue to develop a lifelong love of learning! It is a transition year from the development of skills to the development of independence, it is an amazing year of growth for a child.

Christ the Teacher Catholic  School has high expectations for all its students and we set high goals for our 1st graders, actively engaging them in learning. Using positive motivation and constant encouragement, the students consistently reach their goals and continually “reach for the stars.” God wants us to always be the best that we can be! Upon entering the classroom, there is a visual reminder of how we should always begin our school day: “Love God and Love Others.”

The main focus of first grade is that God is Our Father who created us and loves us and we praise God’s goodness. It’s a wonderful time to remind them of how special they are and how each person is a precious child of God. Through songs, stories, class prayer services and interaction with their peers, the students learn the gospel values of community, faith, hope, courage, love, reconciliation, service and justice.

First Grade is an exciting and busy time for learning, exploring, discovering, and growing. Students will be provided opportunities to learn through hands-on activities, arts and crafts, role playing, technology and oral presentations to demonstrate skills and creativity.

One of our beginning-of-the-year activities is our Coleman Tree Farm field trip. This is a great community builder for both 1st grade classes and parents attending this hands-on approach to learning.  In fact, each month, our students highlight a holiday or cultural event. For example, during the month of November we have  our annual  Thanksgiving Feast, in which we come together as one community. We celebrate All Saint Day, Jesus’ Birthday, Friendship Day(which is on Valentine’s Day) 100th Day of School, Saint Patrick’s Day, Easter, The Blessed Mother, etc. One of students  favorite is our Pirate Adventure Celebration( we incorporate Bible Parables from the Veggies Tales Series)at the end of the school! Celebrating holidays help the students see the rich cultural heritage of their past and the continuity of life.

1st Grade is a journey, not a destination!
